Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Our first stop was an elephant orphanage in Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Compared to the one we went to in Chang Mai, I felt this was a bit of a letdown. There was little in the way of an introduction, and the whole thing felt more like a zoo than a rescue and education centre. There was no explanations of why the elephants were here or what was done to care for them. There was nothing in the way of an education attempt that I saw. It was just pay the entrance fee, see the elephants, move on to the next sight. There were a great many elephants down at the river we could watch which was nice. Later we went back to the main complex for the baby elephant feeding. This consisted of people holding a bottle with an open tube that was poured down the hungry (greedy?) baby’s mouth and quickly emptied.

It was very nice to see the elephants, I just felt that labeling it as an Orphanage may give you the wrong idea, it was really just an elephant zoo.
