Grandma got run over by a….

No, not a Reindeer.

At the movies last weekend, in between previews, there were commercials. One featured a very sweet looking old Asian lady with her equally cute granddaughter. It seems it was granddaughter’s birthday, and Granny wanted to get something special. So, thru soft focus lens work, and light music, we see a scene of Granny and child together, and Granny going to the store to get the cutest, most scrumptious cake ever for the one she loves, and then Granny, cake in hand, heads back across the street to set things up and BAM!!!

Bright white light fills the screen, and when our eyes re-focus, the camera is at street level, smashed cake in the foreground, Granny’s feet off to the side, her prone body off the screen. Tag line: The best thing you can give the ones you love, is your safety.

I can’t make these things up.

I could not help but think if they heard Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer, the Singapore government may view it less a cute Holiday melody and more a cautionary tale to all the Grannies out there.

Having said that, I can assure you that crossing the street outside of crosswalks is still done here, despite the threat of fines, it seems the tradtion is alive and well.

  1. Like my mother said when she heard Princess Diana had been killed in the tunnel: “Meh. She had it coming.”

    Mother plays for keeps.

  2. Hey Buddy…just came across this in the NY Times travel section and thought you might want to see it for a few ideas in your new city. Cheers, Len
